A high-dose calcium and magnesium supplement with a 1:1 ratio, but critically lacks Vitamin D and uses poorly absorbed forms (hydroxide, oxide) for a significant portion of its minerals, leading to limited bioavailability and effectiveness for its high price.

Solaray's Cal-Mag Citrate 1:1 ratio product provides an exceptionally high dose of both calcium (2000mg) and magnesium (2000mg) in a balanced 1:1 elemental ratio. It includes both calcium citrate and magnesium citrate, which are highly bioavailable forms and generally well-tolerated. However, the formulation is significantly hampered by the inclusion of calcium hydroxide and magnesium oxide. Both of these forms are known for their very poor systemic absorption; calcium hydroxide can be particularly irritating and magnesium oxide primarily acts as a laxative, meaning that a substantial portion of these high doses may not be effectively absorbed or utilized by the body for its intended physiological functions. Furthermore, a critical oversight for a bone health supplement is the complete absence of Vitamin D, which is essential for calcium absorption. Without Vitamin D, the body struggles to integrate calcium into bones, severely limiting the benefits of even the absorbable citrate components. The high price per serving ($0.71) is not fully justified given these bioavailability limitations and the lack of Vitamin D.
