Astaxanthin

Description

Astaxanthin is a potent keto-carotenoid belonging to a larger class of phytochemicals called terpenes. It is the pigment that gives salmon, shrimp, and other seafood their characteristic pink-red hue, and it is primarily sourced from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. Unlike some other antioxidants, astaxanthin possesses a unique molecular structure that allows it to span the entire cell membrane, providing comprehensive protection against free radical damage. Its strong antioxidant capacity is significantly higher than many other well-known antioxidants, including vitamin E and beta-carotene. This allows astaxanthin to effectively neutralize various types of free radicals and singlet oxygen without becoming pro-oxidant itself. Beyond its antioxidant roles, it also exhibits potent anti-inflammatory effects by modulating various signaling pathways involved in the inflammatory response. Supplementation with astaxanthin is commonly used to support eye health, improve skin elasticity and reduce UV damage, enhance athletic performance and recovery, and promote cardiovascular health. Its multifaceted actions make it a valuable ingredient for overall wellness, contributing to cellular protection and reduced oxidative stress.
